Akshaya Tritiya, also referred to as Akha Teej, is a very special and sacred day in the Hindu calendar. It falls during the Vaishakha month and is thought to be auspicious, happy, and successful. To commemorate the day, people offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu, fast (don’t eat their normal meals), and prepare rich food.
Why Akshaya Tritiya is Important
“Akshaya” means something that never ends. People are of the view that if they do good deeds on this day, they will be blessed for their whole life long. It is also Lord Parashurama’s birthday, who is an avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that the sacred river Ganga descended on earth on this day as well. People prefer to initiate things and donate, as it is so auspicious.
How to Fast on Akshaya Tritiya: Do’s and Don’ts
Fasting on this day is a way of expressing worship and seeking blessings.
Things You Should Do:
- Get up early in the morning and bathe. This makes you clean and fresh.
- Pray to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Offer them flowers and sweets.
- Chant a prayer or read holy scriptures. Read about mantras or gods and goddesses.
- Eat fasting food only. Fruits, milk, or plain food such as sabudana are okay. Avoid rice, wheat, or regular salt.
- Donate to others. Giving something, such as clothes or food, to needy people makes God happy.
- Purchase gold or silver. Mostly, gold is purchased for good luck.
Things You Should Not Do:
- Don’t eat onions or garlic, or meat. Eat clean, pure food.
- Don’t fight or be rude. Speak politely to all people.
- Don’t lend or take money loans. Don’t lend or take loans today.
- Don’t cut hair or nails. These are not good on holy days.
- Shoo away bad thoughts. Think good and happy thoughts alone.
